Comprehensive Dental Services

At Smiles In Narrogin nothing is more important to us than your health and wellbeing. We offer a range of General, Cosmetic, and Restorative dental services.

Dental Cleaning

Dental cleaning or “Scaling and cleaning” as it’s commonly known is one of the most neglected aspects of dental health for an average patient.

However, it is one of the most important things to ensure that you don’t end up with wobbly teeth which can eventually fall out.

Regular cleaning of plaque and calculus around the teeth, prevents conditions such as gingivitis and periodontal disease which can result in the slow, progressive loss of bone around the teeth.

If you lose enough bone, the teeth can become irreversibly wobbly and painful when chewing and eating. If enough bone is lost, you’ll need to consider the removal of the teeth and teeth replacements.

Dental cleaning involve a gentle procured with electronic and manual instruments to carefully remove all the plaque and calculus around the teeth which you can’t remove yourself with even meticulous toothbrushing and flossing.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are often required when you have decay, broken/worn fillings or fractured/chipped teeth.

We use a variety of materials to repair teeth but the most common material is called “dental composite”.

Traditional “amalgam” or metal fillings are not used as much nowadays due to some of their historic concerns. We feel that white composite fillings are a great solution to most presenting conditions.

We have other alternatives just as ceramic fillings for more broken down and weaker teeth.

We can often avoid the use of traditional and less conservative treatments such as dental crowns however the dentist will have to see you first to determine if ceramic fillings are a better alternative than dental crowns.

Toothache and Emergency Dental Treatment

No one likes being in pain! Toothaches and emergency dental treatment is something you have to try to avoid. Although a visit to the dentist can be quite scary, potentially painful and “expensive”, nothing is as enjoyable than having a tooth in pain treated.

Anaesthetic works less effectively when a tooth ache is present because severe inflammation prevents the anaesthetic from working at its best.

Obviously, we’d love you to visit regularly so we can pick up problems in their earlier stage to avoid more expensive treatment such as root canal therapy.

However, when you do have a toothache or need something attended to quickly, don’t hesitate to call us for a same-day appointment.

We will endeavour our best to get you in as soon as possible to resolve the pain in the most efficient and pain-free way possible.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after treatments in dentistry. However, it doesn’t always work. There are a variety of reasons for why not everyone is suitable for teeth whitening however we have more than 1 method when it comes to improving the shade of your teeth.

Nowadays, in a society where everyone is on Facebook, Instagram or any other social media platform, the desire for having a whiter smile is greater than ever.

Don’t trust the gimmicky advertising campaigns online and on T.V. Come in for a professional consultation and discussion regarding ways to whiten your teeth.

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions or teeth “removal” as we like to refer to them are necessary when the tooth/teeth can no longer be treated with conventional therapy.

As dentists we hate having to remove teeth because we know that you can be often left in a worse position than when you presented however when a tooth really has a hopeless prognosis, we’re left with no choice except to remove the tooth or teeth.

If this is something we need to do, have confidence that we will remove the teeth in the most painless and anxiety-free way possible. We are happy to facilitate treatment under mild sedation or even treatment whilst you sleep. We’ll describe sleep dentistry a little more in our specific section on this.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal therapy is needed when gum disease has progressed to a point that bone is being rapidly lost around the teeth.

This often occurs in patients who smoke, have diabetes or another condition which affects the immune system.

We have to often use local anaesthetic to complete periodontal therapy because of its potentially painful nature (we really need to get down under the gums to do a good job of removal of the plaque and calculus causing the problem).

Sometimes, we also need to carefully chart the “pockets” around the teeth and gums. Deeper pockets cause the increased accumulation of plaque and calculus around the teeth which accelerate the process of bone loss unless we intervene with both mechanical and chemical methods to reduce the amount of plaque and calculus around your teeth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is something needed when decay progresses to the “pulp” or “nerve” of the tooth or if a tooth breaks in such a way, that the pulp or nerve of the tooth is exposed. Often, the cause of root canal treatment is when bacteria sneak under old fillings especially if they have been there for a very long time.
The best way to prevent root canal treatment so to have your teeth checked regularly with the use of x-rays (we call them radiographs). If we can pick up problems in their early stages, we can often avoid the need for root canal treatment.

Many teeth have been saved from complex and expensive root canal therapy because we can use anti-bacterial fillings to stop cavities and decay from progressing to the pulp and/or nerve of the teeth.

Once bacteria have entered the root canal space of the tooth, it’s impossible to guarantee that the tooth will not need root canal treatment and a “dental crown” over the top to seal the tooth and stop it from fracturing.

After a tooth has had root canal treatment, we don’t want reinfection from bacteria, what caused the problem in the first place and because the tooth is weaker from the process of root canal treatment itself, we don’t want it to fracture when you eat something hard.

The tooth no longer has a nerve/pulp so it doesn’t have a protective reflex when you bite something in an awkward or an aggressive manner.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best option for single tooth replacements, second to none. They fit the mouth and function like real teeth. They look like real teeth and finally, they’re strong as if not stronger than natural teeth because they’re made from titanium.

Titanium has a special unique biological property which nature seems to have gifted to us. Titanium actually bonds to bone and becomes naturally integrated into your jaw. We know this because the scientist who first discovered this, couldn’t actually unscrew them from the bone of dog jaws after placing them.

As a result, dental implants are the most biologically compatible teeth replacement options we have. However, there is a clear downside which is cost.

Dental implants should be thought more of as small-scale hip replacements rather than dental fillings or similar. They take careful diagnosis, planning, surgery and precision fitting over a period of some months. Immediate dental implants are an option however they can only be used for select circumstances.

“All-on-4” dental implant treatment can be used to replace upper and lower teeth that are completely lost however these are complex cases often requiring practitioners experienced in the restoration of these prostheses.

Dental implants have an amazing longevity in that they can last your whole life. Bear in mind though, they need special ongoing care and maintenance during their life. Just like you wouldn’t drive around in your car without servicing and maintaining it adequately, dental implants need regular maintenance and cleaning just like natural teeth.

Not everyone is suitable for dental implants, so you need a careful and thorough assessment, often requiring the skills of multiple practitioners experienced in placing dental implants before you’re actually deemed suitable for dental implant replacement therapy.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a long-term, very successful and beautiful way to improve the shade and shape of your teeth, giving you an amazing smile.

Porcelain veneers and/or crowns can be used to correct mild-moderate shape and shade deficiencies. When there are more irregular or really dark teeth, we need to consider a combination of crowns and/or “orthodontics” (moving teeth) to get an ideal, long term stable result.

If you’ve always wondered what “porcelain veneers” are all about, we can discuss these with you in a separate consultation.

The factors involved in providing porcelain veneers and/or crowns to improve your appearance of your teeth and smile are varied. Not everyone is suitable for them and even if you are, there are a few things we need to discuss regarding maintenance of them after we do them for you.

So in short, we need the appropriate time allocated to discuss whether you are in fact suitable for porcelain veneers, what we need to do to your teeth, the potential problems that can arise and the maintenance required to keep them in top nick condition.

Call us today to book in for a consultation so we can talk you through them more.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are the most mis-understood of all dental treatment types in our industry. Often people immediately cease up at the cost of dental crowns which vary between $1,500 – $3,000 per crown depending on the complexity of the crowns.

For example, front teeth require careful shade matching and design which can take multiple try-ins to get right.
Sometimes, we have to use alternative more expensive materials such as gold for strength in hard-to-see back areas of the mouth.

However, in most cases a simple dental crown will cost around $1,500 because of the treatment time in the chair with the dentist and dental assistant. Not only that, we need to use an off-site lab technician who has years of experience in designing and fabricating crowns with the same accuracy and attention to detail as a jeweller.

Dental crowns really are customised functional (you eat and chew with them daily) jewellery. We’re proud to say that in our industry, crowns can last in excess of 30 years with the right care and maintenance. So although they might seem initially expensive, the cost should be spread over the cost of their life just as the purchase of cars.

It just seems that in generally, we value our cars more than our teeth when in fact, our teeth are used daily to eat, chew, smile and talk.

Dentures

Smiles in Narrogin is happy to consult with patients on the best treatment for missing teeth and replacement for improved function (eating, drinking and talking) as well as comfort.

Dentures are a good, cheap solution for missing teeth, however with advanced technology and training in the replacement of teeth, options such as dental implant retained dentures are the best option for both functionality and comfort.

If implants are not an option for patients for any reason, basic dentures are available at Smiles in Narrogin, and all options will be explained to our patients.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are not used as commonly as they were in the past. When you’re missing a single tooth between two other natural or “preferably”, heavily filled teeth, we can use a dental bridge to replace the missing tooth.

A dental bridge is probably not as good as a dental implant when there is a single tooth missing because we have to “drill” into 2 teeth to effectively replace one tooth. However, when there are multiple teeth missing and you have some medical conditions or a situation where dental implant surgery is not suitable, dental bridges are ideal to replace teeth.

Dental bridges have had a long history of success in our industry so although we use them less, they’re not yet obsolete in their use and function.

Smile Makeovers

Did you know that your smile is the first thing people notice after your eyes? It is not at all vain or excessive to consider improving your smile.

Here are Smiles in Narrogin, we can do a thorough smile analysis and determine what is the best solution to improve the appearance of your smile.

We can look at a few options nowadays because of the improvement of materials so porcelain veneers and crowns are not necessarily the only ways to treat your teeth anymore. We have determined good long-term results with the use of dental composites, the same material we use to fix holes and cavities in teeth.

If you’re an existing patient, just call us and book in for a complimentary consultation to discuss what options we must improve your smile. .

Invisalign Braces

Did you know that teeth straightening is no longer just for children? Every day, more and more adults are looking at having their teeth straightened using Invisalign.

Invisalign is way to straighten teeth using sequential aligners which move your teeth millimetre by millimetre until your teeth become straight.

Of course, not everyone is suitable for Invisalign but with the right up-front diagnosis and treatment prescription, we have a really high success rate in treatment of crooked teeth.

Sleep Dentistry

Sounds great doesn’t it? Having all your treatment done whilst you are sleeping. Just remember, there are disadvantages with sleep dentistry that you must understand. We need to call in a specialist who carefully monitors you whilst you’re asleep. As a result, there is an additional cost of sleep dentistry.

Sleep dentistry involves putting you into a deep state of unconsciousness, not so deep that you lose your ability to breathe but a deep state that you’re unaware of what’s actually happening around you and to you.

The good news though is that sleep dentistry is super-safe when done under the care of a specialist trained in the monitoring of your vital statistics whilst you have your treatment done. Sedation or sleep dentistry is becoming more common and is used regularly for more invasive or uncomfortable dental procedures such as wisdom teeth removal and dental implant surgery.

Nowadays, we are also comfortable using sleep sedation for patients who have an extreme fear of dental procedures, usually as a result of bad past experiences.

Talk to your dentist about alternative sedation options including the use of mild sedation tablets to help assist you in overcoming your dental fear and/or anxiety.

Oral Surgery and Wisdom Teeth Removal

Sometimes, surgery is required in certain situations. When teeth are really quite broken down and we can’t properly grasp the teeth with forceps, we need to consider surgery to remove the teeth including their roots.

Wisdom teeth often require the removal of bone and separating the teeth into individual pieces to take them out less traumatically.

As a result, we need to assess your teeth first before we can actually determine that they can be easily removed. If they cannot be removed immediately because of their broken down or difficult nature, we will need to see you again for scheduled oral surgery just exactly as you would need to be scheduled into surgery at your medical hospital.

We also need to consider whether sedation is required because the whole procedure although done under local anaesthetic, can be quite uncomfortable and awkward. Mild sedation with tablets is mostly used but we may also need to utilise sleep dentistry.

Dental Care for The Whole Family

We are proud to look after all patients from all walks of life and all ages. Good oral health care habits need to be instilled at a young age and continued throughout life.

We are A Comprehensive  Dentistry Practice

In general, we can approach dental care in two main ways.

One method is a problem-oriented approach. When there’s a problem, we fix it as quickly as possible.

However, the honest truth is that a reactionary approach doesn’t actually address the core reason why dental problems start in the first place.

At Smiles in Narrogin, we believe in “comprehensive” care. Identifying the needs of the whole mouth including issues associated with diet and oral hygiene is a critical aspect of ensuring that you don’t develop recurrent dental problems.

Dental problems are preventable! Just like obesity can be prevented through a good diet and exercise, dental health can be improved with a good diet, at-home good oral hygiene habits and a regular preventive maintenance plan with your dentist
